Research Process Interviews

Short-form interviews with working researchers about how their work goes from idea to publication.

HSCII ("H-Sci") is a small non-profit based in Toronto that conducts primary research and develops free research tools.

We are talking to researchers about the practical side of their work: how a paper goes from an idea to a published thing, and where that process helps or gets in the way. The findings will go into an independent, open-access report.

We are not selling anything, we are not partnered with a journal or publisher, and we will not add you to any list. If you would rather not hear from us again, replying with "no thanks" is enough.

The interviewers

Finn Williams

HSCII Board member

Software engineer, systems researcher.

Destiny Bailey

HSCII Board member

Data scientist, information retrieval researcher.

What to expect

20-minute call

We book 30 so there is no rush, but we aim to be done in 20.

Nothing to prepare

We ask about work you have already done. There is no reading and no right answer.

One recent paper

We mostly talk about a recent paper you worked on, and what the process around it was like.

What happens to what you say

Calls are audio-recorded and transcribed for review. We do not record video. Any published results will be fully anonymized. Transcripts will not be shared outside HSCII and will be deleted after 6 months. What we learn may appear in our final report. We will confirm this with you at the start of the call.
